Thank you for making EES2022 in Kyoto a great success!

To the Worldwide EES Community

I want to thank everyone who attended the 4th World Congress on EES in Kyoto. It was our sincere pleasure to act as host to over 650 visitors from more than 40 countries. I know that, more than in the past, travel has become a challenge and I greatly appreciate everyone who took up the challenge to come to Kyoto. I hope that everyone made it home safely and those of you who traveled from far away have gotten over any jet lag.

The Congress can be considered a success not only in terms of the sheer number of attendees, but also because of the excellence of the presentations. I think that we can say that endoscopic ear surgery has truly come of age, and its reach will continue to spread as it becomes a standard part of otological practice around the world.

I know that for many of us, the 4th World Congress marked the first big event that you attended since the world was plunged into the turmoil of Covid 19. I hope that you were able to take advantage of the opportunity to not only attend the many different sessions, but also engage in face-to-face conversations in hallways or over meals. These interactions are essential to the exchange of information, cementing of ties and emergence of new ideas.

I am so appreciative of everyone who contributed to the planning and organization of the 4th World Congress on EES in Kyoto. The condensed schedule placed nearly unreasonable demands on time and effort of everyone involved, and I am so grateful that everyone worked together without complaint to achieve a successful Congress.

In closing, it was my great honor to serve as Chair of the 4th World Congress on EES in Kyoto. I now look forward to the 5th World Congress on EES in Sao Paolo in 2024.

Sincerely

Seiji Kakehata MD, PhD

Welcome to the 4th World Congress in Kyoto

I am beyond delighted to welcome everyone to the 4th World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery in Kyoto.

Little did I know what trouble laid ahead when I gave a presentation at the 3rd World Congress in Boston in June of 2019 on our planning for the 4th World Congress in Kyoto in April of 2021. By the end of that very same year of 2019, murmurs were being heard around the world about a new virus that may pose a serious threat to health.

This virus, Covid-19, upended life as we know for everyone on planet Earth including our plans in 2021 for the 4th World Congress on EES in Kyoto.

However, despite everything, including multiple moving of dates, the stars finally aligned, and I am thrilled to be able to welcome over 500 attendees from over 40 countries to the 4th World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery

We have a program packed full of illustrious speakers on endoscopic ear surgery who represent leaders in this now maturing field of otology. I hope that everyone takes this chance to not only learn about the latest developments in EES, but also engage in face-to-face communication with colleagues that has not been possible for the past couple of years but is so important to the fruitful exchange of ideas and future growth.

So please take this opportunity to meet up with old friends, make new acquaintances, and enjoy the historical city of Kyoto as it is bathed in the warm colors of autumn.

So once again, welcome to the 4th World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery in Kyoto!

Spread the word about "Cool Kyoto"!

To EES2022 Attendees

We will be holding a "My Cool Kyoto" contest for conference participants who upload their own "My Cool Kyoto" photos and comments on social media with hashtags such as "#ees2022kyoto, #kyoto, #ees2022, or #MICE". Participants are encouraged to share their own discoveries of Kyoto's attractions, such as Kyoto's World Heritage sites, cityscapes, Japanese food (especially Kyoto's Japanese food), which has been honored as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and what we in Japan have affectionately dubbed "B-class gourmet foods" such as ramen noodles which Kyoto is also famous for. Those participants whose postings receive the most "likes" will be awarded a prize during the Congress.

We hope that everyone will take the time to participate and spread the word about "Cool Kyoto"

Countdown to Kyoto!

To Our Worldwide EES Community,

While it is hard to believe, we have less than one month until the opening of the 4th World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery in Kyoto!! At present, we have around 500 attendees coming from approximately 50 different countries, many of which are represented for the first time at a World Congress on EES. These figures truly attest to both the growing interest in and the spread of EES around the world.

The Organizing Committee together with presenters, lecturers and instructors have all been extremely busy putting together a program that we think everyone will be more than satisfied with. To get an idea of what is on the schedule, you can take a look at the updated program which we have attached to this email.

For those of you who have not yet registered or still have been debating whether to attend, I hope that the above information is enough to sway you to come to Kyoto. Don’t forget that the deadline for registration is November 18th (Fri) at 12:00 PM (JST).

I can guarantee that the 4th World Congress on EES in Kyoto will be an opportunity not only for learning about EES from the top experts in the field, but also an opportunity to bring us all together for much needed face-to-face interactions and exchanges of ideas that have been impossible over the past couple of years. Who knows what new ideas and new opportunities will arise from conversations in hallways or over a cup of coffee, a beer or even some of the best sake that Japan has to offer!

See you soon in Kyoto!

Dear EES Oral and Poster Presenters,

I am sure that all of you are busy putting together your presentations, and we all look forward to learning from your endeavors.

We have attached Guidelines for Oral and Poster Presentations that we would like you to refer to and follow. These Guidelines should help you in producing the best possible presentation.

We greatly anticipate enjoying the fruits of your labor this December in Kyoto!

Posting of the Program for the 4th World Congress on EES in Kyoto
Early Bird Registration Extended to November 7th

We have been extremely busy working on the program for the 4th World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery in Kyoto, and I am pleased to say that it has almost completely come together. One thing that I can tell you is that the Congress will be packed full of interesting and exciting Keynote Lecturers, Instructional Course Instructors, and Round Table/Panel Discussion Participants. Congress attendees are guaranteed to go home much better informed on the present and future of endoscopic ear surgery, new developments in hearing therapeutics and other related topics, and how progress in these fields is changing the face of otology, in particular, ear surgery.

Please go to herefor the latest information on the Program Schedule.

I would also like to announce that we are extending the deadline for Early Bird registration from October 31st to November 7th. I encourage everyone who is thinking about attending the Congress to register by then.

Finally, while I think everyone welcomed the lifting of Japanese border restrictions from October 11th, it has had the effect of making it harder to make a hotel reservation. I strongly encourage everyone to reserve a room in Kyoto as soon as possible.

I look forward to seeing everyone in Kyoto this December!!
Warm regards

A Glimpse into the Sublime World of Ikebana

We are delighted to welcome Ryuho Sasaoka to the 4th World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery in Kyoto. He will be a featured performer during the Opening Ceremony of the Congress which will be held on December 5th in the ROHM Theater Kyoto. Mr. Sasaoka will be demonstrating a side of Japan that some of you may be familiar with, specifically Ikebana, or literally “living flowers.” Ikebana is often called “Japanese flower arranging” which conjures up images of static arrangements of flowers in full bloom.

However, ikebana is so much more than that. Ikebana is an art form and philosophy which is based on the entire life cycle of flowers and what that life cycle can teach us.

Mr. Sasaoka is the head of the Mishoryu-Sasaoka Ikebana School which was founded by his grandfather in 1911. While he has worked to preserve and carry on the traditions of the school, he has also sought to expand the scope of ikebana through dynamic live performances of flower arrangement. He has performed for both Japanese and international audiences and we are grateful that he accepted our invitation to perform for us.

At the opening ceremony at ROHM Theater Kyoto, December 5th

You can learn more about Ryuho Sasaoka and the Mishoryu-Sasaoka Ikebana School here.

Reopening the Call for Abstracts

Lateral skull base (LSB) pathology represents a challenge for the surgeon. Thanks to the improvements in surgical instrumentation and a growing body of surgical experience performing LSB procedures, the endoscope has gone,

We have had several inquiries about whether it is too late to submit an Abstract for the EES2022 World Congress. While we ourselves have never ever missed a deadline (???), we decided in the spirit of openness and the recognition that getting things done and planning ahead have been really, really hard in the past couple of years, to reopen submissions for Abstracts.

You can submit your Abstract via the Call for Abstracts page on our website. I strongly encourage anyone who was on the fence about presenting in Kyoto to submit the fruits of your research.

Please note that the reopening of the Call for Abstracts is only for new submissions. Revisions to previously submitted Abstracts will not be accepted.

The deadline for submission of new Abstracts is Wednesday, September 21st, 2022, 12:00 noon (Japan Standard Time, UTC+9).

We look forward to seeing you in Kyoto in December.

Message from a Guest of Honor
Livio Presutti, MD
Chair of the 2nd WCEES in Bologna

Lateral skull base (LSB) pathology represents a challenge for the surgeon. Thanks to the improvements in surgical instrumentation and a growing body of surgical experience performing LSB procedures, the endoscope has gone, in the last fifteen years, from being an adjunct instrument to improve visualization, to a technical tool that allows surgical maneuvers in hidden or complex areas of the surgical field.

Endoscopic approaches have been developed through the natural orifice of the external auditory canal, such as the transpromontorial, the infracochlear and the suprageniculate approach. At the same time, considerable experience has accumulated on the use of the endoscope during specific phases of traditional approaches to the LSB, particularly the retrosigmoid and the translabyrinthine approaches.

This Keynote Lecture will encompass both exclusive endoscopic and endoscopic-assisted approaches to the LSB. Special emphasis will be on the technical refinements and possible pitfalls based on the extensive personal experience of the lecturer.

Dr. Muaaz Tarabichi MD
Chair of the 1st WCEES in Dubai

Nasal endoscopic access to the Eustachian tube has excited a new interest in the Eustachian tube and its dysfunction with attempts at better understanding of obstructive pathologies and new interventions. Wide adaptation of endoscopic ear surgery and its superior access to the protympanum promises to provide a similar catalyst for better understanding of the ear side of the Eustachian tube and provide a new understanding of the anatomy, importance, function and dysfunction of that segment of the Eustachian tube. Many new diagnostic methods are also well within the reach of our hands that should allow us to better understand the role of the proximal Eustachian tube in chronic otitis media.

One Door Closes but Another Has Opened

The deadline has passed for Abstract submissions, and I am happy to announce that we received around 300 Abstracts from individuals all around the world! This number is even more impressive in light of the political, economic and medical challenges facing all of us today. It is a testament to the growth and strength of our community and the spread of endoscopic ear surgery.

I am also pleased to announce that Registration is finally open for the EES2022 Congress in Kyoto. Early Bird registration will run until October 31st (Mon) 2022 with Regular registration running until November 18th (Fri) 2022. You can access the Registration Page at https://plaza.umin.ac.jp/ees2022/registration/index.html

For any of you still weighing the pros and cons of attending the Congress, let me tell you that visiting Japan has not only never been cheaper, but you will also get a rare opportunity to enjoy your stay in Kyoto without battling hordes of tourists.

I thus encourage everyone to register early to take advantage of both the Early Bird rate and the weak yen which is currently hovering around 133 yen to the dollar (compared to around 110 yen to the dollar of the last couple of years). You are getting a close to 20% discount from last year just on the exchange rate!

If you run into any problems with your registration, please contact the EES2022 Registration Desk at ees2022-rgst@or.knt.co.jp

We will also be sending out information on visas in the upcoming days. Since visas require entry within a three-month period, we will be starting processing on our side from the beginning of September.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Kyoto!

Meet the man who started it all

Our Guests of Honor list is already an embarrassment of riches with our lineup made up of Dr. Yasuya Nomura, Dr. Livio Presutti, Dr. Muaaz Tarabichi and Dr. Jacques Magnan as well as the late Dr. Naoki Yanagihara. However, today I would like to take this opportunity to announce the addition of another very special Guests of Honor, Dr. Jean-Marc Thomassin. Dr. Thomassin is truly a pioneer of endoscopic ear surgery who took the lead in developing and refining endoscopic ear surgery procedures. Moreover everyone of us has taken in hand his namesake surgical tool, the Thomassin dissector, which greatly facilitated the successful performance of endoscopic ear surgery.

I am so pleased that Dr. Thomassin has accepted our invitation to attend the EES2022 Congress as our honored guest. I look forward to welcoming to Kyoto one of the true fathers of endoscopic ear surgery.

Abstract submission extended!
Good News for the Undecided and Procrastinators Among Us!!

I wanted to let everyone know that we have extended the deadline for submission of Abstracts from July 1st to July 14th (Thursday) 12:00 noon Japan time.

If you were sitting on the fence about submitting an Abstract and let the deadline pass, we are offering you a second chance to let the international EES community know what you have been working on. EES is one of the most exciting areas of otology and we need to show the world what can be achieved through EES.

In addition, we are in the process of planning Panel Discussions, Round Table Discussions and Instructional Courses. We will also be reviewing the submitted Abstracts to see if the authors would be good candidates for participation in any of the aforementioned events.

So don’t miss this opportunity and I look forward to seeing the submission of additional Abstracts.

To the EES Worldwide Community,

I hope that you are all doing well. I would like to take this opportunity to update everyone on the status of the EES2022 in Kyoto.

The 4th World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery will be held, as scheduled, from December 5th to the 8th, 2022 in Kyoto Japan with the Satellite Symposium held from December 12th to the 13th in Yamagata Japan. Both events will be held live face-to-face with no live streaming.

Thus, it is now time to start making your plans to attend!

The Japanese government has begun to lift restrictions on business visitors from overseas and there is talk of allowing tourists to enter in the near future. We will provide further information at a later date on the visa situation, but also please check with the local Japanese embassy in your country for further information and updates as the Congress date approaches.

The Call for Abstracts will be opened from May 12th, and I am looking forward to seeing what everyone has been working on in the years since our previous World Congress in Boston.

We will also be announcing the opening of registration for the 4th World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery in the near future. Please stay tuned for further information in this regard!

It is an understatement to say that it has been a longer than usual journey to the 4th World Congress with many unforeseen challenges and bumps in the road. I am truly grateful for everyone’s understanding as we have navigated those challenges.

I am optimistic that we will be able to raise a glass of sake (or your beverage of choice) in December to toast the success of the 4th World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery in Kyoto.

ATTENTION TO ALL INTERESTED PARTICIPANTS

4th World Congress on EES in Kyoto to Move to December 2022
I think that the past year-and-a-half has taught all of us around the world that nothing scheduled is set in stone! When I moved the 4th World Congress on EES in Kyoto to April 2022, I was confident that the challenge of COVID 19 would be overcome by then, and that international travel restrictions would be lifted. However, the last couple of months have made me realize that that timeline was too optimistic. In light of the spread of the delta variant and increasing case numbers around the world, I have made the decision to once again move the date of the 4th World Congress on EES in Kyoto.

Our new date is now December 5th to the 8th of 2022. While I realize that this date is close to the end-of-the-year holiday season, it was the best choice out of the available dates for our venue. The weather in Kyoto in early December is mild and while we will miss the Kyoto cherry blossoms, the city should still be beautifully bathed in the fall foliage including its stunning maple trees.

I thus ask everyone to pencil this new date and cross your fingers that we will have COVID 19 under control by then. While our conference is important to those of us in the field of endoscopic ear surgery, it pales in importance to the good health and well-being of the world community at large. Let us all continue to work together to defeat COVID!
I hope to see you in Kyoto in December 2022!

・Notes from our chair
Greetings to everyone!

We are starting to gear up for the World Congress on Endoscopic Ear Surgery in Kyoto which will be held in less than a year-and-a-half! It was my pleasure to recently welcome Dr. Aaron Remenschneider from Harvard and his lovely wife Emily to Kyoto where he gave a presentation at the 2019 Japan Audiological Society.

We were able to show them around Kyoto and they were kind enough to describe their impressions of the city in a blog posting. For those of you who are thinking about attending the World Congress, I think that their perspective should give you a good idea of what you could expect on a trip to Kyoto.

I thus invite you to read what they have to say and see if you wouldn’t like to follow in their footsteps!?
