Report on the 36th annual meeting of the Japanese Association for Developmental and Comparative Immunology (JADCI), August 29 31, 2025, Hinata Campus in University of Miyazaki (Local Organizer: Jun-ichi Hikima, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Miyazaki. Local Secretary-Treasurers: Tomoya Kono, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Miyazaki)

The 36th annual meeting of the JADCI was held on August 29 – 31, 2025. Eighty-two scientists including graduate and undergraduate students attended this meeting to discuss the host defense mechanisms of invertebrates and vertebrates. The meeting featured three special lectures and two symposiums. Additionally, there were 27 general oral presentations, followed by the active discussion.

Special lectures:
SL1: Akikazu Murakami (Department of Oral Microbiology, Tokushima University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences)
Next-generation antibody development: Rapid acquisition and application of VHH antibodies.
SL2: Yuichiro Hara (Kitasato University School of Frontier Engineering)
Exploring the origins of biological phenomena through cross-species comparisons of gene repertoires.

Symposium 1: Pathogen Recognition via Glycans: From Recognition and Response to Methods
SI1-1. How do parasites locate and deceive their host pufferfish? (Shigeyuki Tshutsui, Kitasato University)
SI1-2. Dynamic interplay of sialylated glycan between host and Edwardsiella piscicida. (Kazuhiro Shiozaki, Kagoshima University)
SI1-3. Exploration and potential applications of algal lectins. (Makoto Hirayama, Hiroshima University)
SI1-4. Innovation and the future of single-cell glycomics. (Hiroaki Tateno, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology)

Symposium 2: The Role of Cell Death in Various Life Phenomena
SI2-1. Evolutionary origin and conservation of the core molecular machinery for necroptosis. (Kenta Moriwaki, Hiroshima University)
SI2-2. The mechanism of cell extrusion. (Kohki Kawane, Kyoto Sangyo University)
SI2-3. Unveiling the mechanism of cell death regulation from lipid-protein interaction: ceramide and necroptosis. (Kazuyuki Kitatani, Setsunan University)

General presentations:
Twenty-seven oral presentations involved in the host defenses of cnidarians, mollusks, arthropods, echinoderms, agnathans, fish, and mammals were made over the 2 days.

The winners of the ‘Furuta Young Investigator Award’ were Mr. Kota Minakata at Keio University (Proteome analysis of anucleate cell fragments derived from the coelomocytes in Patiria pectinifera).
