Academic Awards

Maruho Research Award

Established in 1999 to support the development of young researchers in dermatology, the "Galderma Award" was renamed the "Maruho Research Award" in 2020 and is now operated by Maruho Co., Ltd. Research papers in basic and clinical dermatology, collected through a public call for submissions, are rigorously reviewed by a selection committee. Outstanding papers are awarded, and the award ceremony, along with the award lectures, takes place at the JSID.
For the 26th Maruho Research Award, an Asia-Pacific research category has been newly added to the eligibility criteria.

Eligibility

(Domestic research category [Japan])

Applicants must be born on or after July 1, 1980, and can be of any nationality, and must be members of the Japanese Dermatological Association or the Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology as of the day the paper is contributed. Professors are excluded. However, it should be noted that 'Professors' here specifically refers to those holding the position of 'Full Professor'; Assistant Professors and Associate Professors are not excluded.

(Asia-Pacific research category)

Applicants must be born on or after July 1, 1980, and must be members of a member society in the Asia-Pacific region* of the International Societies for Investigative Dermatology (ISID) as of the day the paper is contributed. Professors are excluded. However, it should be noted that 'Professors' here specifically refers to those holding the position of 'Full Professor'; Assistant Professors and Associate Professors are not excluded.
*KSID, TSID, ASDR, and SRSS are included.

Condition and Theme

  • The applicant must be the first author, the paper must be published in the field of dermatology in 2024, and it must be an original paper or a corresponding text to the original paper.
  • Only papers written in English are acceptable.
  • The printed version of the general journal in which the article was published must be released in 2024.
  • If the journal is published only in electronic media, the date printed on the pages must be 2024.
  • Any article with a lead author who received the Galderma Award, Galderma-Maruho Research Award, or this award in the past is excluded.
  • Regarding the clinical research award(Domestic research category [Japan]), clinical comparison studies, analytical epidemiology research, and accumulated case reports are accepted, however, company-initiated studies or single case reports are excluded.
  • Multiple submissions from the same institution are allowed, however, for the Basic Research Award, only one recipient per institution is generally accepted.
  • Please refrain from submitting papers that have previously won the Japanese Dermatological Association Minami Shogo Memorial Award.
  • Applications for the Asia-Pacific research category for ISID member society authors are limited to basic research papers.

*If mailing from overseas, the application must arrive by the deadline.

Selection method

  • The selection committee will review the submissions and notify the results to the applicants by mid-August 2025.
  • For the selection of domestic research category (Japan), it is acceptable to have co-researchers within the same institution or public research institutions, including overseas, however, research conducted in Japan is prioritized.
  • Joint research with companies, commissioned research, supported research, and financial assistance such as donations or grants from companies may result in other applications being prioritized if they are of equivalent evaluation.

Awards

An award plaque, commemorative trophy, and prize will be presented at the 26th Maruho Research Award ceremony at the 50th Annual Academic Conference and General Meeting of the Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology, to be held in December 2025 (Yamanashi Prefecture Japan). Award recipients are expected to deliver their acceptance speeches in person at the venue. The prize will be 1 million yen per award (excluding consumption tax and withholding tax), up to a total maximum of four awards. Additionally, the winners and their research papers will be posted on Maruho's website. The names of the winners, their institutions, departments, positions, and the amount of the prize will be opened on Maruho's website after the end of the fiscal year (October to September) in accordance with Maruho's "Transparency Guidelines for Maruho's Activities Involving Medical Institutions."
