(げんしょじょうたい the original position)
It is not enough -- indeed, it is irrelevant -- to say that the contract is historically inaccurate, or that the veil of ignorance is psychologically impossible, or that the original position is in some other way unrealistic. The question is not whether the original position could ever really exist, but whether the principles which would be chosen in it are likely to be fair, given the nature of the selection process.

ロールズの用語。 社会契約論における自然状態のようなもので、 社会における正義を決定するための想像上の状態。 「オリジナル・ポジション」とも。 「原初状態」という訳はなんだか大仰なので、 「初期状態」とか「初期位置」とかにした方が良いと思う。
原初状態においては、 各人の個人情報(社会的階級、人種、性別、宗教、価値観) は無知のベール(veil of ignorance)の背後に隠されているため、 各人は自分の特定の状況について知ることができないと想定される。 (ただし、各人はまったく価値観をもたないわけではなく、 自由、機会、富、収入などの、 どういう生き方をするにしても望ましいもの[primary goods]は、 なるべくたくさん欲しがっているものとされる。 (彼はこれをthin theory of the goodと呼ぶ) これによって、 各人は特定の自己利益や価値観から解放され、 偏見のない公平な見地から正義について考えることができる。
一口で言うと、原初状態とは「各人が公平無私だったら、 どのような社会のあり方を望むか」という議論をするための理論装置である。 そして、この装置を用いて、 ロールズは正義の二原理を導きだす。
