Ichiro Kawahata

Ichiro Kawahata
Doctor of Science and Doctor of Pharmaceutical Science, Associate Professor at Fukushima Medical University
AMED Translational Research Project (Seeds B) Research Representative, JST-MASP Research Representative

After graduating from the Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2009, he became an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Tohoku University in 2010, a specially appointed associate professor in 2020, and has been running the Department of Advanced Brain Drug Discovery at the same university since 2021. He has also been a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Fukushima Medical University since 2024. He was a member of the Tohoku University Young Leader Overseas Dispatch Program (Florey Institute of the University of Melbourne) in 2022 and 2023. Aiming to elucidate the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease and develop therapeutic drugs, we are working on research to elucidate the mechanism of selective loss of tyrosine hydroxylase, which is essential for dopamine biosynthesis, in dopamine neurons, and to explore new drug targets by elucidating the pathogenesis of α-synucleinopathy, which is dependent on fatty acid binding protein. We are also working to develop treatment applications and screening techniques for patients with Lewy body diseases, including Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy, as well as Alzheimer's disease, based on our understanding of the pathology of these diseases. We aim to achieve a society with brain health and longevity through these achievements in the areas of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

Kohji Fukunaga

Kohji Fukunaga
Doctor of Medicine, Professor Emeritus at Tohoku University
AMED Fusion Brain Research Representative, AMED Translational Research (Seeds B) Research Collaboration, JST-MASP Research Collaboration

After graduating from the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Kumamoto University in 1980, he was employed as a research assistant at the university's Faculty of Medicine, and in 1985 he received his Doctor of Medicine. From 1988, he continued his studies as a postdoctoral fellow at the HHMI at Vanderbilt University in the United States, and in 1990 he became a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine at Kumamoto University, and in 1993 he became an assistant professor there. he was appointed Professor at the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tohoku University. He discovered CaM kinase II (CaMKII) in 1982, and has since made many research achievements, including the role of CaMKII in abnormal spine formation in mental retardation, the functional regulation of dopamine D2 receptors by fatty acid binding protein (FABP), and the elucidation of the pathogenic mechanism of Lewy body disease by FABP. In addition to neuroscience, he also contributed to drug discovery science, including the development of seeds for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body disease targeting CaMKII and FABP. In academic activities, he served as the editor-in-chief and director of the English-language journal JPS for a long time, and made a great contribution to Japanese pharmacology. He is working on the commercialization of his research results in the drug discovery business.
