Overview of the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health

As its name indicates, the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health conducts education and research in epidemiology and environmental health. The Department provides lectures and practical training in hygiene, social medicine, epidemiology, and other fields for the School of Medicine and the School of Healthcare and Nursing. The Department also conducts epidemiological research into the effects of environmental factors (including psychological and social factors) as well as the biological impact and mechanism, etc., of toxic metals and other trace elements. We continue to engage in research in collaboration with many individuals from domestic and overseas universities and research institutes.

The Goal of Education

The Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health collaborates with other social medicine departments to provide instruction that allows students to learn the techniques and measures they will need as healthcare professionals engaging in the scientific evaluation of the impact that social living, work, and environment have on people's health. The lectures and practical training we provide are merely the entrance to the field of learning. We anticipate that our students will use these lectures as a guidepost to aid them in furthering their own learning. The graduate school gives proactive assistance to students as they work to establish themselves as researchers in a context of implementing epidemiological techniques and evaluation from the standpoint of environmental health in accordance with their own themes.

The Goal of Research

The Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health conducts research concurrently in the fields of epidemiology and environmental health. In collaboration with other departments at Juntendo University as well as organizations outside the University, we conduct interdisciplinary and international research focused on epidemiological research that targets human populations. Research is currently underway on the following major themes.

  • Exposure of pregnant women to environmental factors and its impact on the fetus
  • Evaluation and measures related to psychological health in the workplace
  • Utilization of local resources for early-stage intervention in psychological disorders
  • Epidemiology of risk factors for developmental disabilities
  • The biological effect and mechanism of trace elements
  • Other
