About the Japan Society for Healthcare Interpreting Studies

Healthcare interpreting is advanced health communication that requires interpreting skills, healthcare knowledge, and cross-cultural communication skills. Before the Japan Society for Healthcare Interpreting Studies (JSHIS) was established in January 2021, no academic organization targeted healthcare interpreting as an academic discipline.

The JSHIS hosts academic Conferences and publishes academic journals based on the following policies:

1. Medical interpretation studies including advanced health communication, such as language interpreting skills, healthcare knowledge, and cross-cultural communication skills.
2. Aiming for medical interpretation research as an evidence-based science through empirical research.
3. Emphasis on mutual cooperation between researchers and practitioners.

JSHIS aims to implement the following activities:

  1. ・ Holding academic Conferences, lectures, symposia
  2. ・ Publication of academic journals
  3. ・ Research related to healthcare interpreting
  4. ・ Collaboration with related organizations in Japan and overseas

JSHIS have no plans to implement the following activities:

  1. ・ Healthcare interpreter training
  2. ・ Businesses and events related to qualifications for healthcare interpreter exams
  3. ・ Referral business for healthcare interpreters
