アリストテレスが唱えた四原因の一つ。 今日のわれわれからすると非常に理解しにくい考え方なのだが、 たとえば、 「机は何のためにあるのか」と訊かれて「その上で字を書くため」 と答えたとすると、「その上で字を書くこと」が目的因と呼ばれる。 この例からわかるように、 ある物が存在する理由(「〜のために存在する」)を目的因と言う。 そこで、「世界は何のために存在するのか」と尋ねる人は、 世界の目的因を訊いていることになり、 こういう人は目的論的世界観を とっていると言われる。

ところで、よく言われる「大工が家を作る例」においては、 目的因と形相因は一致するようだ (すなわち、大工の頭の中にある完成した家の姿)。 (05/12/99)
