A new study from the Mikuni Group has been published in Nature Communications.
In this research, they developed an analytical technique to investigate proteins newly synthesized in response to neuronal activity. Using this method, they identified not only proteins whose synthesis increases upon neuronal stimulation, but also numerous very short peptides that had previously gone unnoticed. The synthesis of proteins in response to neural activity supports essential brain functions such as learning and memory. The findings of this study provide new insights into how the brain forms memories and are expected to contribute to understanding the pathology of neurological disorders accompanied by memory impairment, including dementia, as well as to the development of new therapeutic strategies.
