The first pancreas transplantation from a brain-dead donor in Japan was performed at the University of Tsukuba in 1984. However, pancreas transplantation was mainly performed using non-heart-beating donors until the enactment of the Organ Transplant Law in 1997. The Organ Transplant Law legally enabled us to perform pancreas transplantation from brain-dead donors, and the number of procedures has increased since the revision of the law in 2010. Due to the donor shortage in Japan, 27 cases of living-related partial pancreas transplantation have also been performed since 2004.
