The International Society of Oriental Medicine (ISOM) was founded in 1975 as an academic organization for the study of Oriental medicine in general, holding its first conference in Seoul the following year.
At 50 years old, it is the world's longest-running international society for Oriental medicine.
The society's three core board members are Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
Its secretariat is located in Seoul and coordinates activities with the regional offices in each country.
The current (2025) president (22th) is Dr. Ryoji Motoo (Professor Emeritus, Kanazawa Medical University).
Oriental medicine is now a global medicine, and its development must be fostered through collaboration with other countries. The Japan branch of ISOM plays a key role as a core board member.
The ISOM holds its academic conference every two or three years.
It is usually held in Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, with occasional appearances in the USA or other countries.
