A new paper from the Kamikawauchi group has been published in Science. This study reveals which neural circuits in the brain are responsible for the courtship behavior in certain male flies that involves “gift-giving” to females. By genetically reconstructing this specific neural wiring in the brain of a different fly species, the researchers successfully achieved an interspecies transfer of the gift-giving behavior. The findings suggest that subtle differences in the connections among a small number of neurons may drive the evolution of novel courtship rituals.
Congratulations!
