To borrow a phrase from the twentieth century English philosopher Sir W. D. Ross, our treatment of animals, both for Kant and Aquinas, is "a practice ground for moral virtue." The moral game is played between human players or, on the theistic view, human players plus God. The way we treat animals is a sort of moral warmup, character calisthenics, as it were, for the moral game in which animals themselves play no part.

---Tom Regan

[I]t is surely a strange reversal of the natural order of thought to say that our admiring an action either is, or is what necessitates, its being good. We think of its goodness as what we admire in it, and as something it would have even if no one admired it, something that it has in itself.

---W. D. Ross

Let us imagine one world exceedingly beautiful. Imagine it as beautiful as you can... And then imagine the ugliest world you can possibly conceive. Imagine it simply one heap of filth... The only thing we are not entitled to imagine is that any human being ever has or ever, by any possibility, can, live in either [world], can ever see and enjoy the beauty of the one or hate the foulness of the other. Well, even so, supposing them quite apart from any possible contemplation by human beings; still, is it irrational to hold that it is better that the beautiful world should exist, than the one which is ugly?

---G. E. Moore
