すべてのものはそれそのものであり、別のものではない。 行為の善さや悪さは、 その行為がたとえば「せんさく好きな」とか「嫉妬深い」 などと形容されうるかどうかによって決まるのではないのと同様に、 その行為が「自分の利益になる」または「自分の利益にならない」 と形容されうるかどうかによって決まるわけでもない。 行為の善し悪しは、 その行為に現在あるいは将来の快苦がともなうかどうかによって決まるのではなく、 その行為そのものによって --すなわち、 その行為がわれわれのような生物に似つかわしく、 当の状況において必要とされるものであるのかどうかによって-- 決まるのである。
