National University Hospital Clinical Research Promotion Initiative (NUH-CRPI)

Foundation

October 2012: National University Hospital Clinical Research Promotion Initiative founded
January 2013: First general assembly held
June 2013: Approved as a Meeting of the National University Hospital Council of Japan

Organization

Formed from 45 university hospitals attached to 42 national universities across Japan

Purpose

To act as a platform for a variety of clinical research activities, and to promote the following activities:
1. The sharing of information between universities
2. Coordinating work on education and training
3. Promoting clinical research
4. Providing advice to the University Hospital Council

Topics

Five topic groups (TGs) have been set up:
TG1 Study site management
TG2 Networks
TG3 Academic research organizations (AROs)/data centers
TG4 Education and training
TG5 Employment and sustainability of human resources

National University Hospital Clinical Research Promotion Initiative

(Objective)

The objective of NUH-CRPI is to secure that organizations related to the promotion of clinical studies and clinical research at national university hospitals prepare systems for conducting high-quality clinical research and clinical studies safely and efficiently through information sharing and coordination, and to contribute to the development of medical technology and evidence gathering under the management of the National University Hospital Council of Japan.

(Activities)

NUH-CRPI promotes the following activities:
1) Hold general assemblies and meetings of representatives to support mutual information sharing and coordination between members
2) Set up and operate a secretariat to discuss important items related to the operation of the NUH-CRPI
3) Set up and operate topic groups (TGs) to discuss the following items:
Study site management (TG1), networks (TG2), academic research organizations (ARO)/data centers (TG3), education and training (TG4), employment and sustainability of human resources (TG5), etc.
4) Respond to requests, instructions, consultations and the like from the government and the National University Hospital Council of Japan
5) Provide reports and advice to organizations including the government and the National University Hospital Council of Japan
6) Other activities necessary to achieve the objectives of the NUH-CRPI
In carrying out its activities, the NUH-CRPI will work in coordination with the National University Hospital Council of Japan and the Medical Education Division, Higher Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

(Members)

The NUH-CRPI is composed of organizations within universities which support and promote clinical studies and clinical research at national university hospitals. If there are multiple relevant organizations within a university, their representative shall work to coordinate activities within the university. In addition, members must participate continuously and actively in the NUH-CRPI, and endeavor to contribute to the NUH-CRPI’s activities.
Each university shall name a representative recommended by the director of the hospital. In order to further the activities of the NUH-CRPI, the representative shall report to the Chair the persons enrolled in topic groups, a person responsible for the administrative department and a person responsible for handling inquiries, and shall receive approval for these reported personnel.

With the authorization of the Chair, the NUH-CRPI requests collaboration from the following people, in order to obtain their opinions on the activities of the NUH-CRPI:
1) Office for University Hospital Support, Medical Education Division, Higher Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
2) Industry bodies in the pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing and sales industry
3) Other experts related to specific matters
The NUH-CRPI also requests the participation of people related to organizations such as public or private university hospitals as observers at its general assemblies.
