Facilitators and barriers in implementing the nurse practitioner role in Japan: A cross-sectional descriptive study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

International Nursing Review has accepted an article on the facilitating and inhibiting factors affecting the promotion of the role of NP nurse practitioners in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other countries, nurse practitioners (NPs) are nurses who provide diagnoses, order tests and prescribe medication in a limited area. In Japan, nurse practitioners are called nurse practitioners or NPs (the name differs depending on the organization). They aim to provide high-quality nursing care in various settings after completing a master’s degree program that includes specific nursing practice training. We conducted a cross-sectional study of factors that promote and inhibit the role of NPs as perceived by nurses currently working as NPs. The term NP was used to help NPs from overseas understand the current situation in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this study, I, a graduate of a U.S. NP education program, collaborated with Dr. Miho Suzuki of Keio University, who has clinical experience as an NP in oncology nursing, Dr. Watanabe, Dr. Araki, and Dr. Kudo of Tohoku Bunka Gakuen University, an NP graduate program faculty, Mr. Honda, a neurosurgery NP, and Dr. Koda, a statistics specialist, worked on the joint research project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysis of data from 101\/248 valid responses revealed the following;
\u30fb34% were male.
\u30fbThe respondents had more than 12 years of registered nurse experience on an average before enrolling in the graduate NP program.
\u30fb53% were employed as NPsfrom the beginning, while 25% were initially employed as registered nurses and later advanced to NPs, and 11% still worked as RNs.
\u30fbMany NPs perceived the lack of NP national licensure and reimbursement benefits as barriers to NP implementation, whereas recognition from superiors and organizations is considered facilitators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NP licensure system and recognition from superiors and organizations may be necessary to promote NP roles in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
