We are all familiar with Voltaire's dramatic declaration in support of free speech: `I disapprove of what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.' But, disappointingly, Voltaire said no such thing. His comment was, in fact, `What a fuss over an omelette'. Since this hardly amounts to a ringing or eloquent endorsement of free speech, it is not surprising that we prefer to quote the line invented later by Evelyn Beatrice Hall as a summary of Voltaire's attitude.
