Having reached its 30th anniversary milestone, the Japan Academy of Nursing Science (JANS) has now started a new journey of further development. One step is the promotion of the Disaster Nursing Support Project in cooperation with the Japan Association of Nursing Academies (JANA). To enable various nursing academies to work together to promote the Disaster Nursing Support Project, JANS, as a Public Interest Corporation, is sourcing funding, managing grants and promoting the project through a joint committee (the Disaster Nursing Support Project Specialist Committee) with JANA. Please contribute actively to this committee so that we can work together to provide care beyond nursing specialized fields.
Our second effort is our project investing in development of young nursing researchers. This involves creating JANS that enables young researchers to actively lead the development of nursing in Japan and the world for the next 30 years. To achieve this, first our Academy must have stable economic foundations. Based on proposals from our Steering Committee for Future Directions, from last year we have aimed to maximize the efficiency of Academy management. We are implementing this with our eyes fixed firmly ahead, introducing measures such as innovations in ways of holding Board of Directors meetings (introduction of tele-conferences/webcast meetings etc.), online-only publication of the Japan Journal of Nursing Science, and computerization of elections, while engaging in direct consultation with all our Councilors. As we plan for the future, it is necessary to re-evaluate the theoretical foundations of nursing. From the lessons of the 3-11 earthquake disaster, we have learned that people’s body, spirit and lifestyle can be protected and fostered by care even if medical systems that are reliant on advanced technology are helpless. It is necessary for academic conferences to provide opportunities to evaluate the theoretical underpinnings of nursing from this perspective. We want to evaluate paradigms that allow all our young researchers to actively express their views. It is also important to consider the development of nursing from a global perspective. Our International Activity Promotion Committee releases a variety of information about issues on training nursing researchers to a global standard. Representing nursing in Japan to the outside world should be an important issue for all Academy members.
The resolutions of the December 2011 Councilors Meeting and the 31st General Assembly are shown below. We have received a number of suggestions for development of JANS. The Minutes are recorded in the Journal of Japan Academy of Nursing Science, so please read them for your reference.
As always, your continuing contribution is invaluable to promoting all the JANS projects.
