光学的文字認識 (OCR) とは、視覚障害を持つ人が、印刷された文字をスキャンして、合成音声で読み上げたりコンピュータに保存したりできるようにする技術です。現在のOCR技術では、手書きの文字を読み上げることはできません。

OCR技術は3つの要素から成ります: スキャン、文字認識、読み上げの3つです。まず,スキャナを利用して文字を読み込みます。次に、OCRソフトウェアが原稿に書かれた文字や単語を識別します。最後に、識別した文字情報をパソコンやOCR機器に保存します。
