Environmental Health Sciences (Core curriculum: Required) 2 units Prof. M. Kihara (Course director) and Prof. A.Koizumi
From the beginning of the human history, Three factors- host factors (genetic, gender and aging), environmental factors and infectious agents-have been major determinants of human health. In this course, our department teaches basics of modern environmental sciences in collaboration with Department of Socioepidemiology. Our department teaches in the first part of this course. We teach modern health issues associated with environmental agents with an ultimate goal of risk assessment. In this part, basic methods and concepts of toxicology will be provided with current programs in our department.


Medical Sociology (Elective) 2 Units Prof. Koichiro Kuroda, Prof. Junichi Sato, Assoc. Prof. Takeo Yoshinaga and Prof. Akio Koizumi (course director)
This course provides basic concepts and methods of modern medical sociology. In the first part of the course, Prof. Kuroda will provide basic concepts and understandings of medical sociology. In the later part of the course, the idea of risks will be taken as a case study, which has been one of the major topics in the modern sociology as well as modern medicine.


Environment and Health (Elective) 2 units Associate Prof. T. Yoshinaga (course director) , Prof. A. Koizumi and other adjunctive staffs
While the Environmental Health Sciences (Core curriculum)" provides the relationship between environment and health in general, this course provides the mechanistic aspects of various environmental problems. Environmental contaminants will be discussed individually from viewpoint of toxicological mechanisms. The course also covers topics in occupational health. Students are expected to obtain comprehensive understandings for risk managements for various environmental chemicals when this course is taken in series of "Environmental Health Sciences."


Public health Genetics (Elective) 2 units Prof. A, Koizumi (course director), Prof. Kosugi, Prof. Matsuda, Prof. Shirakawa, Prof. Sato and Prof. Teranishi
This course provides the basic scientific understanding of human genetics as well as its applications, including current research and anticipated scientific advances. The course provides basic knowledge to learn languages of human genetics, to engage in critical thinking about genetics, and to be able to define the interface between genetics and public health. This course will also discuss application of public health genetics, relates genetics to the core public health discipline of epidemiology, emphasizing the use of genetics to understand disease frequency and distribution and to gain insight into biological etiology.
Finally this course will provide perspectives of related areas of public health genetics, such as ethical, legal, and social issues and analysis arising from the increasing application of genetic technology to the health of individuals and populations.


Short courses of medicine I and II (Required for students who do not have had courses in medical fields) 2x2= 4 units Prof. Hiroshi Oka, Prof. Yoko Hagiwara and Assoc. Prof. Takeo Yoshinaga(course director)
These courses provide the basic knowledge for medicine minimally required for learning public health. These courses cover basic medical sciences including anatomy, physiology, pathology etc and clinical medicine.
