I, Keitaro Hashimoto of Yamanashi Medical University, have recently been elected to serve as chairman of the Japanese Pharmacological Society for fiscal 2002 and 2003.

As this society has over 6,000 members, I have the heavy responsibility of operating the Board of Directors and committees so that the society will be helpful for the research and educational activities of many members. The selection of chairmen of committees is currently under way, and I am having difficulty selecting only a few from many competent members.

I served as Chairman of the Public Relations Committee during the last term. Upon reflection on the activities of the committee, I feel that maybe communication between members and the executives of the society, such as that through this homepage, was not yet sufficient. It has been pointed out that opinions and requests from many members are not taken into consideration because the Board of Directors consists of less than 20 directors. For this societyfs success in the future as well, I hope that the Board of Directors will receive opinions from you members by all means and will begin working on whatever they can at this point in time.

I will formally express my hopes after the new committees start their work. I hope that the societyfs activities will bloom as brightly as the full-blown cherry blossoms in this photo (The Thousand Cherry Trees of Toyotomi-mura, Nakakoma-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture; April 3, 2002).

Your cooperation is welcomed.
